Scared of the Hype

Perfume by Patrick Suskind \\ Delirium by Lauren Oliver \\ The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern \\ The Book Thief by Markus Zusak \\ Cinder by Marissa Meyer
That's right; I'm yet to read these books. I'll just let myself out.

I have a bit of a problem when it comes to reading books which have been super hyped-up. I just get scared that I won't like it as much as I'm expecting to and that it'll be a let-down, so I leave it to gather dust on my bookshelf. This has happened to way too many books and, for the most part, I end up really enjoying them once I finally read them *cough* Divergent, City Of Bones, Eleanor & Park *cough*. Even though I run the chance of being banished from the blogging community, I thought I would share some of the books that I'm too scared to read with you all (please don't kill me).

First up is Perfume by Patrick Suskind. This is my friend, Jenni's, favourite book and she recommended it to me a few months ago. I bought it straight away and put it at the top of my TBR pile but then just didn't read it. The thing is, I love the sound of this one and I have a strong feeling that it'll become one of my favourites but I'm nervous about reading it in case it's a massive let-down. Jenni and I have very similar taste in books so I trust her judgement; I'll definitely get Perfume read in the near future.

Next is Delirium by Lauren Oliver. I have a feeling that this will be one of the more popular books in this bundle... Every time I mention that I haven't read Delirium, I get an onslaught of comments telling me that I need to read it and that I'll love it. This is why I haven't read it yet! Again, I have a feeling that I'll end up enjoying it but the hype is scaring me off at the moment.

Please don't hate me for the next one: The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. I bought this absolutely ages ago and started reading it straight away but, for some unknown reason, I put it down after a couple of chapters and never picked it up again. This definitely seems to be a favourite amongst my readers and people are sure that I'll love it so it'll get read this year - I promise!

Another one that'll kick up a storm: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. This is another one that I've owned for a long time and, again, I started reading it when I got it but put it down after a couple of chapters. I just forgot about it and then it was too late to go back to... I didn't let myself see the film because I'm set on reading the book first so this will be getting read soon (I hope).

Lastly, Cinder by Marissa Meyer. If you follow me on Instagram (@CatHannahXD), you'll know that I was reading Cinder a few months ago. To cut a long story short; I didn't really like what I read (just under half of it) so I gave up. I hate not finishing a book so I'll definitely go back to it quite soon - I've heard great things!

Have you read any of these? Do you have any books that you're scared to read because of the hype?
Lots of love, Cat

  1. I agree with you on The Book Thief. I bought this back in January and read about half of it before getting distracted and putting it down. One of the reasons that it hasn't lived up to the hype for me is because I found out the ending by chance and so it doesn't feel the same as it would if I didn't know. I plan on picking it up over the summer again though.

As for Delirium; I'm not going to start the onslaught of comments but I just wanted to say from experience that I didn't think it'd live up to the hype at all and it really did, Pandemonium not so much but Delirium really did. I guess it's different for everyone but this was such a unique book.
Cinder is one that I'm weary about so I'll see about that...
    Holly xx

    1. I've been meaning to read The Book Thief for absolutely ages so, unless my AH English reading takes up too much time, I might read it in the summer. ^_^ Same with Delirium - I want to read that in the next couple of months! xx

  2. I really need to read Delirium and The Book Thief too - I started them but just couldn't get through them! :( The Night Circus is an absolutely beautiful book, I loved it! I recommend reading it in the winter cosied up next to the fire with cinnamon hot chocolate! Also, Cinder! I definitely recommend you try this again. It does get soooo much better as you go through it and the second and third books in the series are just amazing! You really need to meet Captain Thorne ;) Also, Cress, one of the main characters in the third one, is a total fangirl and really relatable! I hope you enjoy the books :D x

    1. Oooh I might have to save The Night Circus for Winter, then! I'm looking forward to it. ^_^ xx

  3. Great choices, Cat! I haven't read ANY of these (shame on me, I know) but they are on my wishlist :)

    1. Good to know that I'm not the only one who hasn't read these ^_^ xx

The thing with the book thief it only gets going after the first few chapters, but definitely stick with it! I loved Cinder, I think the first chapter was a bit boring but about time I got to the middle I was really into it, however it was bit predictable. I haven't read Delirium yet because I've been disappointed by the hype a bit too often (don't shoot me but take TFIOS for example the hype just ruined it completely for me). I haven't heard of Perfume or the Night Circus though.

    1. I'll definitely stick with The Book Thief and Cinder. ^_^ I think the hype ruined TFIOS for quite a lot of people...it's a shame. xx
